How to estimate concrete driveway cost

Calculate base volume in cubic yards: length × width × thickness in feet ÷ 27. Apply 5–10% waste for grade variation, spillage, and uneven subbase, then multiply the suggested ready-mix order by your supplier's price per cubic yard.

The concrete material line is only part of a driveway budget. Site demolition, excavation, compacted gravel base, reinforcement, forms, control joints, finishing, sealing, permits, delivery, pump access, and labor can exceed the concrete cost itself.

What changes the cost of a concrete driveway?

Cost factorWhy it matters
ThicknessMoving from 4 to 5 inches increases concrete volume by 25%.
Base conditionSoft or poorly drained soil may require more excavation and gravel.
ReinforcementRebar or welded wire mesh adds material and labor.
FinishBroom finish is typically simpler than exposed aggregate, color, or stamping.
Truck accessRestricted access may require wheelbarrows or a concrete pump.

Common driveway sizes

Assumes 4-inch thickness and ready-mix at $150 per cubic yard.
